this is what one might look like when you buy it...

Customization of the abadá is a HUGE tradition among the women in Brazil. First of all, what is an abadá? Well, in brazil, especially for certain parties during carnaval called “blocos” or “camarotes” (click HERE to read my post on what blocos and camarotes are) and also for a type of party called “micareta” (sort of like off-season or early carnaval) you must be wearing an abadá to gain entrance. Abadás are brightly colored, decorated shirts that display the name of the party’s sponsor (most are sponsored by whatever kind of beer will be served by the party – skol, brahma, devassa, etc..) Abadás  are sold in advance before the party, and can be purchased either online or by street vendors. You will need to be wearing the abadá in order to enter whichever event you are going to. But that isn’t to say that you need to wear an abadá that looks exactly the way you bought it…

In other words, alterations of abadás are allowed. So, women in brazil will buy their abadá in advance, take it to their neighborhood seamstress (called an costureira) who will customize it (very inexpensively, because in brazil, hand labor is very cheap). Since brazilian women always strive to stand out from the crowd, customization of the abadá has turned into an art that is aimed at catching attention in a space full of people, guys and girls, who are all wearing the same shirt.

*One more thing to remember: abadá is also the word for the white pants used by practitioners of Capoeira. This is a completely different thing than the promotional t-shirt sold for Carnaval. Both just happen to use the same word.

customized abadás

Here’s a step-by-step guide that I found online for customizing your abadá. It’s obviously in Portuguese, so I have also included a small vocabulary list below. If you need more help with the fashion vocab, click Here to see a list in one of my earlier posts.

How To Customize Your Abadá (In Portuguese)

Veja O Passo-A-Passo Como Para Customizar O Abadá:

  • Corte as mangas e as golas para deixar a camiseta ou abadá mais fresquinha;
  • Depois ajuste o comprimento da camiseta ou abadá. Se quiser mostrar a barriguinha, corte cerca de 20 centímetros;
  • Corte cerca de 50 centímetros de 3 ou mais fitas coloridas. Você pode usar duas fitas de cetim normais de cores diferentes, e uma fita com lantejoula a metro;
  • Com as 3 fitas juntas, dê um nó em uma das partes de cima da manga;
  • O resto das fitas ficam livres para serem enroladas ao redor do tecido. Depois faça um segundo nó para prender o restante das fitas;

Customização de Camisetas Para Shows, Camarotes e Abadás
