Valentine’s day in Brazil
Dia dos Namorados is Valentine’s day in Brazil (namorado/a means boyfriend/girlfriend in Portuguese). Valentines day in Brazil takes place on June 12th (it probably isn’t celebrated in Febuary like everywhere else in the world as to not compete with carnaval – a time when everyone in Brazil becomes “single” for a week or two regardless of their actual relationship status.)
The traditions surrounding Valentine’s day in Brazil are quite similar to those in the States. If you are a guy, it’s generally a good idea to make some plans, perhaps a reservation at a nice restaurant followed by a walk on the beach. It’s my guess that motel room rentals skyrocket on this day, as most unmarried people in Brazil live with their parents.
Happy Dia dos Namorados everyone!

Dear, we also have the religion / mistic tradition of prayer for "Santo Antônio", and make some "simpatias"in other to get his favor in having a boyfriend. He is considered the saint "casamentereiro". Tomorrow I'm gonna give this short lesson to my japanese student. As soon as possible i post it.

“Passar o dia dos namorados solteiro é o mesmo que passar o dia de finados vivo… Você não participa da comemoração, mas pode ser que esteja bem melhor que os homenageados!…”
{ English Translation: “Spending Valentine’s day single is the same as spending the day of the dead alive… You don’t partake in the festivities, but rest assured you’re probably way better off than those who do!…” }

Thanks!
Laurena, I’ve been visiting your blog searching quality material to show to some foreign friends. I have to say it is quite good, having in mind the huge differences among reagions in Brazil. Congratulations. I’m here also to tell you that Dia dos Namorados in Brazil is on June 12th because on 13th is St. Anthonny’s day. So it works just like Christmas: during the night before the day of the saint, we celebrate it. The reason is not the proximity of Carnival! St. Anthonny is the one in catholic tradition who can get you someone to marry to. Tha’s why this is our “Valentine’s Day”.
