Brazilian Novela “Fina Estampa”
Watching Brazilian novelas is an excellent way to work on your listening comprehension skills, as well as to build your Portuguese vocabulary. Luckily, many novelas are now available online, and you can even watch entire episodes. One of the big novelas in Brazil right now is called “Fina Estampa,” which translates to ”fine pattern” (I know, it’s kind of a strange title. I think that it isreferencing the contrast between the high-style lifestyle of “rich” brazilians and the poor, modest class that is portrayed in this particular novela.)

Fina Estampa, TV Globo's primetime novela is currently the program with the highest ratings in Brazil.
Novelas tend to have several plots going on at once, but the main story of Fina Estampa centers around the relationship of a young couple. The girl is from a very wealthy family, and the guy’s family is very poor (his mother is a mechanic). Basically the boyfriend is pretending that he has money in order to impress his rich girlfriend, and they get engaged under these false pretenses. Well, the future mother-in-law (who is the villian in this story) soon finds out about the true background of her daughter’s fiance and basically exposes him at their engagement party, humiliating him in front of all of their friends and family. Then a lot of other things happen, and well….here’s the novela’s trailer…

Absolutely love this novela
I found your blog while studying for my portuguese final. At first I thought it was just a grammar blog (which would have been awesome either way!), but then I started reading your articles and I love them! Great job with the blog.
Continue assim!
Mas uma pergunta para você: onde posso assistir novelas brasileiras on-line?
