Brazilian Portuguese Vocabulary – At The Movies

“Sucesso de bilheteria” – “Box office hit”

Ex: It was a big box office hit. (Foi um grande sucesso de bilheteria.)

Estrear (filme, peça) – To open, premier (a film, play)

Ex: Do you know if the movie opens tomorrow? (Você sabe se o filme vai estrear amanha?)

Passar (programa, filme) – To show, play (a TV program, movie)

Ex: They’re showing a new movie. (Está passando um filme novo.)

Ingresso /Bilhete – Movie Ticket

Ex: I’ve got two tickets. (Tenho dois ingressos.)

Ir ao cinema – To go to the movies

Ex: We arranged to go to the movies. (Combinamos de ir ao cinema.)

Cinema (disciplina) – Film

Ex: She said she wants to study film. (Ela disse que quer fazer cinema.)

Indicaçao/Indicado/Indicar (ao Oscar, prêmios em geral) – Nomination/Nominee/Nominate (at the Oscars, or award shows in general)

Ex: The film was nominated for an Oscar. (O filme foi indicado ao Oscar.)

Interpretar (Um personagem, um papel) – To play (a role)

Ex: He will play the father in the soap opera. (Ele vai interpretar o pai na novela.)

Papel (Em novela, teatro, filme) – Role/Part (in a novela, theater or film)

Ex: She plays the role of a young nurse. (Ela faz o papel de uma jovem enfermeira.)

Peça (de teatro) – Play

Ex: The play was awesome. (A peça estava incrível/excelente)

Ganhar (Oscar, prêmios em geral) – To win (an Oscar, or awards in general)

Ex: He dreams of winning the Oscar. (Ele sonha em ganhar o Oscar.)

Papel principal/Coadjuvante – Leading/supporting role

Ex: She was chosen for the leading role. (Ela foi escolhida para o papel principal.)

Aulas de teatro – Acting lessons

Ex: They’re going to take acting lessons. (Eles vão fazer aulas de teatro.)
