Slang Lesson: Popular Portuguese Slang Phrases

WHAT DOES “QUEIMAR MEU FILME” MEAN?

phrase: “queimou meu filme!”

literally: “you burned my movie!”

actually means: “you made me look bad!”

sentence: “Você está queimando o meu filme !! Sai fora !!”

sentence: Ele queimou o filme dele depois de sucessivos barracos, mas agora quer limpar sua barra.” – “He ruined his reputation after successive squabbles, but now he wants to clear up his difficult situation.”

phrase: “é nóis na fita!” (or just: “é nóis”)

literally: is we in the tape!

actually means: of course! / that’s it / let’s go (depending on context)!

sentence: “-Vamos lá naquele bar? -É nóis na fita!”

 

WHAT DOES “PODE CRER” MEAN?

phrase: “pode crer”

literally: “you can believe”

actually means: something along the lines of: “word, man.”  this phrase can also be used as a synonym for yes (“sim”) or “you’re right” (“está certo”.)
